Why Do We Snore?

An average person's snoring can generate noise levels of close to 92 decibels, making this sound one of the loudest noises the body can produce! Scientific explanation of why we snore is actually quite simple.

Stop Snoring - Why Do We SnoreWhile we breathe, and typically during the inhalation phase, the air flowing through the nasal passages creates a vibration in the soft tissues of the mouth and throat.

When we sleep, the whole body relaxes, including the muscles in these areas, causing even more soft tissues to be disturbed by vibration.

The position of the head and body during sleep may cause the size of airway to decrease, and that combined with the vibration produces this disturbing and loud noise that we call snoring.

Snoring Can Be Dangerous

Millions of men and women snore once in a while or almost every night. While snoring may lead to relationship problems, especially when one partner snores and the other one does not, there are even more serious reasons for wanting to correct this problem.

Over the years, research has shown that chronic snoring can have measurable adverse effects on health. Chronic snoring is a warning signal that our bodies give us to indicate that something is wrong. The body experiences a lack of oxygen caused by temporary breathing interruptions and frequent gasps for air while sleeping.

Waking-up repeatedly during the night, insomnia, irritability and morning headaches are common symptoms related to snoring. If left untreated, this condition may worsen and possibly be diagnosed as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea could lead to further health issues, such as high blood pressure, heart problems and even strokes.

“Laugh and the world laughs with you; snore and you sleep alone.”

How To Stop Snoring

There are many factors that can cause snoring, sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. The good news is that you do not have to resort to surgery or other medical intervention to treat these conditions. A better approach might be to adopt a healthier diet, regular exercise to maintain optimal body weight and avoid poor bedtime habits that might interfere with sleep.

In addition to these life-style changes, there are various products in the market today that might help to control snoring and its damaging effects.

1. Chin straps

A chin strap is a simple device that is placed on your head to gently keep the jaw pulled upward and keep the mouth closed. This properly aligns the throat so that the airway passage stays open and unrestricted. One of the most popular chin straps is: My Snoring Solution.

2. Snoring aid pillows

These pillows are specifically designed to correct the sleeping angle between the head, neck and chest. This type of product is very successful in solving snoring issues by modifying a person's sleeping position (sleeping on the side vs. on the back). Here are just a few from the long list of available brands and shapes of snoring aid pillows:

3. Snoring mouthpieces

There are quite a few brands of snoring mouthpieces in the market, but the general idea is the same for all. Before going to sleep, the device is placed in the mouth and the mouthpiece will keep the tongue and chin in a neutral and relaxed position, which will stop you from snoring. Few of the most popular brands are:

4. Continuous Positive Array Pressure (CPAP) units

CPAP, in simple terms, is a breathing mask. This oxygen mask contains a gentle fan that continuously delivers a steady stream of pressurized air, which prevents your throat from collapsing. This device is prescribed for more serious sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.
